Kintore Intrusive Project

Power Grid Civils is delivering key early-stage works for MGroup on the Kintore to Hurlie 400kV overhead line project, undertaken on behalf of SSEN.

This new OHL route will run between Kintore Substation in Aberdeenshire and the new Hurlie 400kV Substation, located approximately seven miles southwest of Stonehaven. The 32.4 km line will comprise two 400kV circuits on AS4 tower construction with a triple conductor configuration. In total, the route includes 96 towers, 58 suspension towers and 38 tension or terminal towers.

To enable the XU route alignment, several diversions of existing OHL routes are required. Power Grid Civils has been appointed to carry out full-depth intrusive investigations on affected towers, assessing both existing foundation conditions and underlying ground conditions. These works are essential to inform and finalise the design of the new 400kV line, for which Power Grid Civils also holds designer responsibilities.

Intrusive investigation works are scheduled for completion by early 2026, with main construction expected to commence in 2027.
