North London Reinforcement (NLR)

The North London Reinforcement (NLR) project will ensure London and the surrounding area is connected to the new and future renewable energy that is being generated by offshore wind, solar and other sources around the country, keeping up with the capital’s increasing energy demand.  The NLR project was approved to support the Government targets to connect 50GW of offshore wind by 2030.

Power Grid Civils are working on behalf of our valued client Morrisons Energy Services to deliver the civils scope on the North London Reinforcement (NLR) Project for National Grid. This project is part of the “Great Grid Upgrade” – the largest overhaul of the electricity transmissions network across England and Wales in generations and will play a significant part in meeting the UK Government’s plans to power all homes and businesses with green energy by 2030.

The project has a multiple number of Overhead lines including the ZBC, VC, ZBD and 4ZM routes all running through the suburbs of North London. Access is limited and has been created in built up areas. Initially Power Grid Civils will construct the relevant;-

  • Access roads
  • Construction Yards
  • Bellmouths including natural drainage works
  • Installation of Culverts to create access for other contractors
  • Flood defence works

Once the access works has been complete Power Grid Civils will undertake upgrading of existing towers across the project. NLR commenced in February 2025 and will run into 2028.
